Playing out over millions of years is the cycling of carbon materials from the air to the land, washing back to the sea, settling to the ocean depths, being integrated into the seabed and eventually returning to the atmosphere to repeat the cycle.
The Earth’s primary carbon reservoirs consist of marine and terrestrial biospheres, the atmosphere, the ocean, and sediments/rocks all of which interact over periods of time. These time periods can range from decades to millions of years.
Green plants play a significant role by annually capturing carbon using the process of photosynthesis. With the aid of sunlight, it returns it through organic
(aerobic) decomposition which in turn releases carbon dioxide and other gasses.
