Most of Earth's carbon is stored in rocks with the rest in the ocean, atmosphere, biosphere, soil carbon, carbonate sediments, organic carbon sediments and fossil fuels.
A "safe zone" is an area where carbon will be stored in a form that will prevent its return to the atmosphere for up to thousands of years.
The deep oceans and several land-locked basins have sufficient areas to safely store the excess carbon from our activities that the natural carbon cycle cannot handle quickly enough.
